Mehdi Masoor Biswas, the Bengal Jihadi and ISIS's voice on Twitter, arrested in Bangalore had an alleged link with SIMI and TMCP.
Sambuddha Gupta | Spotlight News Service | Bangalore | 14 Dec 2014:: Now it is too much publicized that a Muslim young techie suspected of running an influential Twitter account promoting Islamic State (IS) has been arrested in Bangalore in Karnataka state in southern India, police say.
The man, a 24-year-old working in Bangalore IT Company, was named as Mehdi Masroor Biswas.
It flashes after the British Channel 4 News said it had identified the man running the account.
The @ShamiWitness account, which has since closed, provided news on IS (formerly ISIS) and celebrated its rise in Syria and Iraq.
Police said Mr Biswas was arrested for cyber-terrorism offences and crimes against the state, but they do not know whether he has actual links to IS or not.
BBC reports that ....
An engineer by training, Mr Biswas went online late at night to "ferociously tweet" information about IS, police said.
With nearly 18,000 followers, @ShamiWitness was one of the main sources of information about the group in English.
The IS militant group has used social media to recruit foreign fighters and to disseminate videos of their fighters beheading Western journalists and aid workers.
The Channel 4 News report said he told followers that he would have joined IS himself if his family did not depend on him.
"If I had a chance to leave everything and join them I might have... my family needs me here," he said.
'Biswas abetted English-speaking terrorists'....
Karnataka DGP Lalrokhuma Pachau told reporters, "His Twitter handle had become a source of information for new recruits of ISIS. He was in touch with the English-speaking terrorists, thereby abetting them." Reddi, however, said Biswas was not recruited directly by ISIS; neither did he have any role in recruiting cadres for the group. "He never travelled outside India," Reddi added.
Biswas retweeted many Arabic posts translated into English. The Twitter handle @ShamiWitness, now closed, had 17,700 followers.
Accused of abetting ISIS crimes in Syria, he has been booked under Section 125 (waging war against the Republic). The FIR states he has also been booked under Sections 18 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and Section 39 of the IT Act, 2000.
An ardent follower of an extremist ideology, Biswas lived two lives. One was his day job that got him Rs 5.38 lakh per annum; the other was of a jihadist sympathizer propagating the cause in the night. He had a 60GB monthly internet plan.
But we know less about Mehdi Masroor Biswas ....
Hailing from Kaikhali- Gopalpur (North 24 Parganas) in West Bengal, Biswas led a quiet life in a single-bedroom apartment in Aiyappa Layout, Jalahalli. His father, Mikail Biswas a retired employee of the West Bengal Electricity Board, and two older sisters live in Kolkata.
Mikail told to a Benagli News Paper that his sons's twitter account might be hacked anyway. But he is not that type of boy indulging in 'fasad' as they are all devout Muslim. When asked what is his stand about ISIS, he stated that he would not know more about that organisation but if they are in the right path of Islam, they cannot do any wrong.
From source, it is known, Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the accused and arrested ISIS sympathizer is an electrical engineer working as a manufacturing executive for a multinational company with a diverse product portfolio, Biswas thought he would never be caught. "He introduced himself as a Libyan man living in the UK to his followers and ISIS members following him on Twitter, and never revealed his real identity or location," as an investing officer said.
The academic career of Masroor is good enough as he scored high in both the 10th and 10+2 standard obtaining first division. He cleared his engineering degree in Elec. Engineering from Guru Nanak Technical Collage at Sodepur. He was opted in a Bangalore based MNC in his present service through campussing in 2012. Since then Masroor has been staying in Bangalore.
Bangalore Police described him as a radical ideologue of the jihadi cause, who reportedly told interrogators, "India does not have real Muslims capable of jihad". A senior police officer who interrogated him said Biswas supported ISIS because he felt they were fighting "the real war".
As per source, Masroor was a supporter of both SIMI, the banned radical Muslim student organisation and TMCP, the student wing of Trinmool Congress, the ruling party in Bengal who are virtually fanning Bengal Jihad by promoting Muslim appeasement with no limit.
The other twitter handle and facebook accounts managed by Mehdi Masroor Biswas support both the activities of SIMI and TMCP in a very explicit manner.
